The life you save may be...your own?
Dead End Jump
by Elle Pepper
It started, as most good things do, with a cliché. A living, breathing
cliché; a man so normal that he was out of place standing in my front room
dripping wet. His clothes were normal for a rainy town, a trench coat,
boots, a hat, and white gloves.
I hadn't gotten his name or the name of this dumpy little town. All I knew
was that this was the third time he had come to me like this.
"Mr. Saunders," he said, pronouncing my name correctly, "if you want to
live, I suggest you come with me." Three times now, I had heard him say
that, but something made me pause this time instead of slamming the door
in his face. I saw him look down at his watch and then back out into the
rain. "We don't have time for this."
